Me And The Boys Development
Me And The Boys has released. This post talks about it's release as well as the development and inspiration for the game. I felt like the game had a lot of different parts to it all from different ideas.
I guess if you are reading this in the future, it is February 20. I finally released this game. This game took a long time to be made. I first had the idea for this game when watching a YouTube video. I don't remember the YouTuber or the game he was playing, but the art style was very colorless. Just black and white. This inspired me to make this game's art be colorless.
Some more gameplay of either the same game or a different game inspired the idea of the apartment. Add a bit of Hello Neighbor inspiration, and you've got a break into a bunch of apartments to collect keys.
Now, here's the whole reason I made this post, I get to explain the inspiration for the characters.
Loner - I wanted a basic guy that you played as, and while you need loner, you don't need him to complete things, only to pick up keys.
Telly - Inspired by the idea of a TV villain in SMG4's newer videos. The gameplay gimmick for him is inspired by a camera system. His entire purpose was to monitor things. The problem was, he wasn't useful. To combat this, I added Telly Gates, or the gates that Telly opens when he views the right TV.
Jock - His gameplay idea was what made him a character. Unlike Telly, I didn't have a good idea as to what he would look like. His gameplay mechanic is that he can knock down NPCs. A very key feature in the game. I had decided pretty early on to only have 3 ways of obtaining keys. (NPCs, Tables, and just sitting there). Those three ways are ignoring the moon, though.
Prop - Probably the most unique character. Prop's idea came from his mechanic. Turn into furniture to stay hidden from NPCs. The other big feature is that he can walk through doors. During development, he didn't have this feature. I wanted to have a way to obtain keys in furniture even if the NPC wasn't home. I came up with Jock breaking down doors. This feature was bugged, and it made Jock feel overused. So, I changed it and moved it to Prop instead.
All of this was fully planned all the way back in December. Why did I only now make it? Motivation Loss, but I had the idea and I had Loner's art done. I finally got the motivation to finish it, and it's good to have done.
The last inspiration for the game was the name. Me And The Boys is named after the meme Me and the boys at 2am looking for BEANS. I didn't really know what else to choose as the name. The game is set during the night. The characters are a group of boys. They are searching for keys. Close enough.
Well, anyway.
